15 Aug 2010 - Foundations

Getting the construction going gave us all a great feeling, but that's been a little tempered by some issues in the ground. We all know that a stable building depends on a solid set of foundations. Well, Hashem certainly had a surprise in store for us on the grounds of the new centre.

One side of the property sits on a rock shelf. It's great to set foundations down on rock, but we needed to blast sections of the granite out to make way for the foundations. That amounted to project delays and some extra costs.

Meanwhile, the other half of the property sits on soft earth, so we had to dig considerably deeper than we had anticipated to set up decent supports for the building. Again, delays and additional expense.

Just to make life interesting, we encountered water in the middle of the site. We had Grant, our engineer, feverishly incorporating a drainage system into the concrete surface bed without delaying the works any further.

Thank G-d, we're working with a fantastic team who do their best to look after us, keep the project moving and the costs down. Special thanks to Julian Michaels, Grant Harli, Paul Valentine of Davis-Langdon, Brett Hetz of Leetek and the team at Bartlett Construction.
